The dramatic evolution of new technologies and their impact on research in the fields of genetics and molecular biology have made the Bioinformatics Core (BC) an indispensable resource for TIGEM. The mission of the BC is to enhance the quality of research through the provision of design and statistical assistance in hypotheses formulation, modelling, data analysis and biological interpretation.
The Bioinformatics Core supports TIGEM’s research community in addressing a wide variety of biological questions from genomics to transcriptomics using state-of-the-art bioinformatics, statistics and systems biology approaches. Genome-wide scale experiments are nowadays affordable for individual research groups, although the specific expertise needed to analyze the experimental data requires interdisciplinary expertise not available within individual research groups. The BC provides such expertise and keeps up-to-date with cutting edge technologies and solutions. BC members work closely with the researchers as a team and interact with them during the entire analysis. Analysis solutions can either be accomplished with existing resources or may require developing ad hoc databases and software tools. Finally, the BC also organizes small courses and presentations to disseminate awareness on bioinformatics and statistics within the TIGEM community.
The Bioinformatics Core expertise can be broadly divided in the following main areas, although significant overlap exists within the areas: 1) Statistical data analysis; 2) Genomics and proteomics analysis including Next-Generation Sequencing applications; 3) Maintenance and development of bioinformatics databases and software; 4) Image processing and analysis, and 5) Training in bioinformatics and statistics.
